Leggings
Physical Description: wool; 24" x 33" (each piece).
Museum Description: wool leggings, hand sewing, two leggings of black wool material, each of one piece of wool 33" long, 24" wide, folded and sewn along the side, the lower edge is bound with light blue ribbon, the side edge of the back is bound with red ribbon, sewn along the outside edge of the front is a strip of hand sewn applique ribbonwork in green, fuchsia, purple, yellow, light blue and orange in a pattern of rows of diamonds and elongated triangles, the green is the outermost color, the edge of it has white beads sewn along the legging edge, lavender beads sewn in spot stitch are also sewn along the green ribbon, just from the edge, along the back of the leggings are two rows of hand sewing with blue threads, the remainder of some trim, caught in them, cords braided from the red, blue and green yarn, 17" long, with tassels on the ends, are sewn at the top outside the corner of the leggings.
NDT Note: pair of hand sewn leggings made of trade cloth wool, material is of dark royal blue dyed wool almost black, each legging piece measured 33" long, 24" wide, folded and sewn about four inches from the edge along the side to form the legging, the lower edge of the leggings were bound with light blue ribbon, the side edge of the back is bound with red ribbon (a bias hem, to protect the edge from fraying). sewn along the outside edge of the front is a strip of hand sewn applique ribbon work in green, (Pantone #357C/green), fuchsia (Rhod.RedC/pink), purple (Pantone #273C/purple), yellow (Pantone #125C was/now 124C/gold), light blue (Pantone #312C/aqua blue), orange (Pantone #1797C was/is 1807C/Red), in a pattern of rows of diamonds and elongated triangles, the green is the outermost color of the ribbon, the edging of the legging has white beads (#10 seed bead), sewn along the leggings edge, a finishing edge of beads, where every other bead is sewn so the bead stands on end and the other bead sewn flat to the surface; lavender beads sewn in spot stitch are also sewn along the green ribbon, just from the edge, along the backs of the leggings are two rows of hand sewing with blue threads, the remainder of some trim, caught in them, (behind the ribbon work flap, is a border of silk material (Pantone #300C/blue), used to hide the stitch work of the ribbon work, only the frayed edge of the silk material caught by the sewn threads are left; cords braided from the red, blue, and green yarn, 17" long with tassels on the ends, are sewn at the top outside the corners of the leggings; LD/ the cords were braided and sewn on the leggings because of wear, at the tops of the leggings, where the trade cloth wool material was extended to loop and tie on the belt to hold the leggings up, this part of the leggings material was missing, in further examination of the item the trade cloth wool had ripped from the weave so the yarn cords had to be added to hold the leggings up, "a hurry up fix job", the leggings were soiled and worn, as if used quite frequently, the blue bias hem at the bottom of the leggings (Pantone #312 C/aqua blue) was in a frayed state and faded.
